Computer Games Alert

I came across the most interesting article in The Daily Mail the other evening, well it was the only thing available to read at the consultant's rooms. Usually, I would only ever allow myself to be observed reading The Times, anything less would simply never do...

The article claimed that children should not be allowed to play with computer games until the age of seven because the technology is apparently “rewiring their brains”and “shortening the attention span and harming the ability to learn.” A psychologist has stated that computer games fuel the development of the basic fight or flight response rather than considered reasoning – OHMYGOD!!!

My darling man and burly boy Max have spent so much time of late playing the High School Musical game on the Wii, taking turns to sing the solo’s and duets, being awarded scores from the console for their efforts. The competition between father and son is frightfully intense… I simply can’t allow this to continue. Clearly if the playing of such computer games goes unchecked a career in musical theatre beckons for my darling son…

OVERMYDEADBODY!!!

There is only room for one drama queen in this household. From now on Max shall be encouraged to play with his Sodoku PC game, Power Rangers and Lego. As a mother, I am ever vigilant to the wrong influences after all. Have you noticed the price of Touche Eclat alone?

Quite right too. The men can't be encouranged in this dangerous behaviour. You put you tiny perfecty manicured and shod foot down.

Love you, are you for real?

Of COURSE she's for real, R&C. That's like suggesting Santa Claus doesn't exist...

Darling Retired and Crazy,

I really must make a stand! Of course I am for real sweetie! Doesn't simply everyone keep a blog ;).

Perfect Potty Mummy,

I knew that you believed in me (sigh) - being an extremely yummy mummy is terribly hard work for both of us!

I really am out of touch - I guess living in a barn does that.

'The Man' plays his Wii all the time -(let's not go there)

But(I am embarrassed to say)- I had to look up Touche Eclat....now that's just wrong!

Oh Aims darling, we must go shopping!

Around here, life as we know it would come to a resounding halt if such views predominated.
Cheers

Oh Darling DM, I know exactly how you feel. My own darling boy is, shall we say, a little theatrical. Indeed, I commented to his sperm-donor last weekend that son-and-heir was a bit of a drama queen and he said, "I wonder where he gets that from?"

raine said...

Oh how I wish I had a theatrical son! It would be so much more civilized that the whole Jedi and light saber hacking. I, however, must run right out and get the HSM game for myself and my girl...off I go now!!

(If I haven't delurked before this - I love your blog)

Darling Maddy,

I know what you mean - the weekend has consisted of one long tantrum, James is simply refusing to back down. I may be forced to send my husband to his room!

Lovely Mrs-inaction-man,

I would love to read your blog!

Sweet Rain!

Thank you so much for your kind words. The HSM game really is super, I just wish that the boys would let my baby girl play...

Yup, there is not enough space for too many drama queens in one house. To get them away from such bad influence, start with some man-ly online games, as: http://www.festei.de/Flaschei.1049.0.html [german website, but the game is self-explanatory]

Darling Regina,

Thank you for your kind advice - I took a look at the site you suggest and it appears to be concerned with the drinking of German bear? My darling Max is just six years old and I am concerned to know if this beer is organic?

Anonymous said...

Oh, I see your point. I am sorry I was not conscious of the young age of your son, I guess it is not organic beer, I was more aware of the real stylish glass bottles of the beer (no tin cans or modern plastic container). Yet, no drinking is involved but really quick ordering. Ain't that an ability you can never learn early enough ;-) But, might be still interesting for the older male being in your family.
But, for computer games for children I then recommend: http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/ (well of course only in a year and not earlier - unless you want to create a school yard power ranger instead of a nobel prize winner)

Hi DulwichMum,
As you clearly don't take the Mail on Sunday, are you aware that there is a piece in today's edition all about your blog?
Prepare for a deluge of hits!

dulwich mum darling, if you are concerned about your son's development I would be happy to swap your high school musical game for my husband's sing-along-a-sound-of-music. I'm sure the change would do him the world of good

dulwichmum said...

Oh Shell,

I am always willing to share my thoughts and insights - I am just a typical working mother afterall!

Perfect Rilly,

I am not worthy of your attention! Email me your home address and you can have the entire Wii too!

I can see some of the logic behind this thinking, maybe gaming in moderation gaming is ok though. Surely there are some good things to come out of it such as improving hand-eye coordination, and learning the importance of winning and not taking part ha ha. I guess being a male I'm bound to defend gaming lol.

Darling Nunhead mum of one,

You really should try paying that mobile phone bill of yours! XXX

Lovely Fetch-boy,

Are you a father sweetie? I should imagine that it sheds a whole new light on the subject - my husband is currently sulking...
